Hanwha Solar is a part of the Hanwha Group, a South Korean conglomerate headquarted in Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 1952 as Korea Explosives, Inc., Hanwha has grown into a multi-business conglomerate - From explosives to manufacturing and construction including Q Cells, financial services, engineering, chemicals, retail and hotels and resorts.

The company has been very successful at purchasing businesses with proven technology and/or specialized business sector knowledge and integrating them into their own operations. For example, the company purchased a 49.9% equity stake in Solarfun Power Holdings of China in August, 2010 (Currently Hanwha SolarOne), launched Hanwha China in June, 2011, and acquired German based Q.CELLS in 2012. These acquisitions in combination with the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement approved by Congress in October, 2011, opened the U.S. solar market to Hanwha's China made solar panels.
